Abstract

Not so long ago, the microcomputer was a rare and exotic sight in Ghanaian classrooms. Then, during the 1980s, many professions began acquiring microcomputers and putting them into use for instruction, drill and practice, record keeping, and other applications. In addition, rather than rote learning endeavours, computer-assisted applications might help learners to learn what is provided through the applications permanently. The main purpose of computer-assisted instruction is to deliver the content of a course through computers and realise instructional endeavours through the help of computer applications. The strong movement of the National regional and local levels 20 great technology into the curriculum has a number of questions and answered. That's technology, specifically the use of computers and the choice of software utilised, improving student achievement and attitude in mathematics. The study was aimed at assessing the impact the usage of computer-assisted instruction could have on student teachers' performance in mathematics related courses in the colleges of education. It also examined how well student teachers coped with computer-assisted instruction in the teaching and learning process. Their research was an action research design which made use of quasi-experimental approach to estimate the causal impact of an intervention on target population without random assignment. The study utilised Campbell and Stanley's (1963) control group design. Data collected was analysed both manually and electronically using SPSS version 12.0. The study established a number of benefits of computer-assisted instruction which seem to outweigh those of the traditional method of teaching from the point of view of the experimental and control groups used in the research work. The study concluded that the availability of computers and accessories like projectors and input tablets at the colleges of education could help in raising the academic standard of our teacher training institutions.
