Abstract

Background: Glaucoma is a group of progressive optic neuropathy disease characterized by degeneration of retinal ganglion cells. This causes changes in the optic nerve and loss of visual field. Several studies reveal that there is a role for Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)-? in glaucoma cases.

Objective: To determine the relationship between TNF-? levels with intraocular pressure, visual field defects and cup-disc ratio in patients with primary open angle glaucoma.

Method: This study was an analytical observation with cross sectional design. Intraocular pressure was measured using a non-contact tonometer. Visual field was assessed with Humphrey visual field perimetry. Examination of cup-disc ratio was assessed with optical coherence tomography and TNF-? was measured with ELISA.

Result: The sample of this study was 30 subjects with 16 male (53.3%) and 14 female (46.7%). Using the Spearman correlation test showed that there was no significant correlation between TNF-? and intraocular pressure (p=0.230). TNF-? was also found not significantly correlated with visual field (p=0.119) and cup-disc ratio (p=0.940).

Conclusion: TNF-? level was not significantly associated with intraocular pressure, cup-disc ratio and visual field defects.
