Abstract

Ethnicity, it is important to note, is an outcome of British colonial enterprise in Nigeria.  Ever since its advent, there has not been any let up to it. As a matter of fact, there’s hardly anything ethnicity does not rear up its head in Nigeria. Granted that it has impacted negatively in a large measure on the country, there are some positives to it. The aim of the paper is to bring those positives to light. Findings show that ethnic consciousness helped in a large measure in helping Nigerians cope with colonisation as well as bringing about an improvement in infrastructural facilities in the rural areas. The paper is based on secondary data-books, journal articles etc were used in arriving are the position in the paper. It concludes that Nigeria could have been better if the mobilisation done by ethnic associations for their members were replicated at the national level.
