Democracy and Development in Nigeria: A Study of Bayelsa State (1999-2019)

Abstract

The study examines the impact of democratic governance on development in Bayelsa State, covering the period 1999-2019. Democracy and development have been linked in the proposition that democracy promotes development. This is based on a number of elements of democracy that creates avenue for development to take place. Essentially, development implies the improvement of people’s lifestyles through education, income skill development, employment, etc. The main ingredients of development are the people themselves who should state their development goals for their own community. Arising from this, the study shall be guided by three main objectives. The first is to examine the impact of democratic rule on development in Bayelsa State. The second is to evaluate democratic governance with a view to determining the extent it has promoted poverty reduction and guarantee of the economic rights of the people, and the third is to determine the impact of democratic governance on infrastructural development in Bayelsa State. To achieve these objectives, the study shall adopt the political economy analytical theory as its explanatory framework for analysis of the issues that would be raised in the study. Data from primary and secondary sources generated from questionnaire and key informants interview shall be used for this study. The questionnaire responses will be presented in frequency distribution tables and the qualitative data shall be analysed using simple percentages and charts. Findings reveal that democratic governance has promoted development objectives in the study area. Based on the findings the study recommends that democratic governance be strengthened to promote development in rural areas of the state.
