Correlation between Myopia Level (Mel) and Myopia Grade in Adolescents at University of Sumatera Utara Hospital
Keywords:
Myopia, Axial length, MelatoninAbstract
Introduction: Myopia is a refractive disorder in which parallel light from infinity, after going through a process of refraction in the cornea and lens, converges in front of the retina in an unregulated state. Circadian rhythms control the circadian balance of the neurohormone Melatonin (Mel). Melatonin has been shown to suppress the rate of myopia deprivation in chicks implying that the higher the melatonin concentration, the lower the melatonin concentration.
Purpose: To analyze the correlation between Melatonin (Mel) level with myopia patient in adolescents.
Materials and Methods: This study is an analytical observational study with a case-control design. A total of 26 subjects with myopia in the study group and 26 subjects without myopia in the control group were included. Sampling was conducted from March 2022 – July 2022 at the Eye Polyclinic of the Pediatric Opthalmology division. The Kruskal Wallis test was used with a significance level of 5% and Spearman correlation test was used as correlation test.
Results: The average melatonin level in the case group was 179.67 pg/mL (SD = 146.48 pg/mL) while the control group averaged 111.56 pg/mL (SD = 48.72 pg/mL) indicating that there was a difference in the average melatonin level between the myopia and emmetropia groups (p = 0.016).
Conclusion: There was no significant correlation between melatonin levels and axial length (p=0.401) and the degree of myopia (p=0.055).
