Rainwater Harvesting Sites Geospatial Modelling for Wadi Haseeb Watershed, East Khartoum, Sudan

Rain water harvesting is a common practice for water provision in the Sudan for domestic uses and agricultural production. In the East Nile locality such water can be harvested from surface flood and wadies during rainy season. The main objective of this study is to identify appropriate dam sites for harvesting such water coupled with modelling dams filling program. Landsat 8 (173/49) image and digital elevation model (DEM) were acquired in 2016-2017 from the Survey Administration-Khartoum State. Daily rainfall records for the period 1989-2018 were obtained from Khartoum Airport Meteorological Station. Soil data was obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Khartoum State. An integrated approach incorporating remote sensing, geographic information system and conventional hydrological methods was used for selection of suitable dam sites. Thematic layers namely slope, land cover/use, stream order and hydrological soil group were geospatially analyzed. The geospatial modelling recognized three suitable dam sites designated (Dam A, Dam B and Dam C). The study recommends dam A and C having each water head of 5, reservoir areas of 14.8 Km2 and 9.5 Km2 and rate of discharge 21.9 m3/s and 10.1 m3/s respectively, proposed for irrigation purposes; whereas dam B with its 4 water head, 8.9 Km2 reservoir area and 10.6 m3/s rate of discharge is suitable for flood control.
