Empowering Engineering Minds: Unveiling the Significance of Personalized Learning in Mathematics Education

Personalized learning is an educational approach that combines face-to-face interaction in the classroom with technology to improve students' strengths, needs, interests, and expertise. It involves classroom facilitators to guide each learner on an individualized learning journey. This study aimed to determine the effect of personalized learning in teaching Mathematics to first-year civil engineering students in the first semester of academic year 2021-2022. The ten-week study employed a mixed method design and pretested the experimental and control groups in the first week. In the experimental group, students worked independently while the instructor facilitated learning through small group discussions, tutorials, and drills as part of the man-machine intervention. The posttest and focus group discussion were conducted in the last week of the study. The results showed that a personalized learning approach helped engineering students improve their problem-solving skills and mastery, as evidenced in the posttest results. Thus, the implementation of personalized learning necessitates a change in how teachers and students approach their instructional practices.
