Fishermen's Village as a Gathering Place

This research explores the dual function of the breakwater in the coastal area of Palu Fishermen Village, which not only serves as a barrier against large waves but also as a popular gathering spot for the local community. Through direct observation and in-depth interviews with breakwater users, it was found that this structure is visited at least once a week by local residents. Activities carried out in this area are diverse, including strolling, fishing, relaxing, and light exercises such as jogging. Visitors feel safe and comfortable due to the availability of various culinary facilities, such as somay and meatball vendors, which add to the area's appeal. Beyond its protective function, the breakwater also plays a significant role in enhancing social interactions among community members. This area serves as an ideal meeting point for interacting with friends and family, strengthening community bonds, and providing space for recreational activities. The findings of this study highlight the importance of inclusive design in public infrastructure that considers not only technical aspects but also social and recreational functions. Thus, the breakwater in Palu Fishermen Village functions not only as coastal protection but also as a public space that supports the social well-being of the local community.
